Hi, I’m Laura
I know what it’s like to care for someone around the clock for years. I understand the joy as well as the exhaustion, isolation, and confusion. I also understand the burning rage directed at a world that doesn’t see our labour and won’t help.
In the past, I researched moms of disabled children and wrote about their experiences in academic journals. These days, I facilitate writing circles so women can tell their own stories. I shared part of my own journey parenting my son, Matthew, in ‘The Invisible Woman,’ which won the 2025 CBC Nonfiction Prize.
I’m passionate about extending the conversation about caregiving and the ways we can support caregivers. I have shared my story and research with the medical and legal communities, as well as with parents and community leaders.
Honouring the voices and wisdom of all caregivers
The Invisible Woman
2025 CBC Nonfiction Prize Winner
“As a mother who had cared for a profoundly disabled child for two decades, I knew what it was like to doze on the floor while my child slept, to be invisible in the face of my son's extraordinary needs. I wanted to shift the light and illuminate the mother. I hoped that through my story, I might draw attention to the labour and love of all caregivers who sacrifice to ensure a family member thrives.
I wrote The Invisible Woman to illuminate the unsustainable responsibilities many mothers shoulder to ensure their child flourishes,” said to CBC.
Time outdoors has always been my most powerful coping mechanism, sustaining me during years of extreme caregiving and complex grief.
